During a recent upgrade of the Onboard Administrators for a c7000 chassis I ran into an odd problem. The version of OA that was installed was 2.02 (I know it is very old nearly the first release). I attempted to upgrade from 2.02 to 2.51 without taking any intermittent steps, this large jump cause quite a few issues and problems once the upgrade was complete.
After the upgrade completed the chassis stayed online but was reporting a critical error with the power supplies. In fact the chassis did not detect power supply 1, 3, and 6. The 3 power supplies that it did detect (2, 4, and 5), were reporting an unknown status on the voltage and input type. While the chassis was still up and all blades still working there was some data being reported wrong. After calling HP and having parts sent out to correct the issue we uncovered the reason for the problem; they ended up sending us a replacement Onboard Administrator Sleeve to correct the problem.
When upgrading the OA it is best to take small jumps in the revision levels due to some of the upgrade tasks and the updates that are applied to the OA Sleeve. The most critical update in the string is the 2.31 upgrade; after that patch is applied you can jump to 2.51 or 2.52, then upgrade to the 2.6 versions. So just to be clear the correct way to upgrade this firmware from 2.02 to 2.5x or 2.6 is to do the following: 2.02 -> 2.31 -> 2.51 -> 2.6... Making a large jump in the firmware string can and will cause issues like I saw above.
